Key Learning Areas (Primary)

The Key Learning Areas (KLAs) are the subject areas identified by the Australian Education Council, and developed bu CURASS (the Australian Education Council's Curriculum and Assessment Committee) in answer to a formal initiatve to develop "national curriculum projects".

These subject areas were defined as:

Nationally NSW
The arts

English

Health and Physical Education

Languages other than English

Mathemtatics

Science

Studies of Society and Environment

Technology

Creative and Performing Arts

English

Personal development, Health and Physical Education

Languages

Mathematics

Science and Technology

Human Society and its Environment

Technology and Applied Studies

Statements of Learning

In 2003, the MCEETYA (the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs) descied to formaulate national Statments of Learning, in order to achieve greater national consistency acorss the eight States and Territories of Australia. This would allow students moving inter-state to continue with consistency in their schooling.

The Statements of Learning describe the essential skills, knowledge, understandings and capacities that students should have the opportunity to learn by the end of Years 3,5,7 and 9.
